Umbria, Italy

These paintings and travel sketches were done during my Maine Arts Teacher Fellowship in Italy June/July '08.  I studied with Chicago Art Institute Professeur, Nina Weiss.  I felt immersed in the Italian culture during my Fellowship.  I learned new plein air painting techniques.  I focused on line, shape, value, contrast, color and composition.  I painted three acrylic paintings in the field and took them home with me on the plane back to Maine.  Also while in Umbria I took many of photographs for new paintings.

The  Travel Sketches in this collection are quick gestural sketches from my travel sketchbook.  I plan to paint from them.  Signed 8.5" x 11" with a 5" x 7" color travel sketch images on archival paper are also available under 'open editions' on the menu bar for $35.00 each or any 4 for $130. USD.  Designated signed black and white travel sketches  8.5" x 11" with a 5" x 7 " image on archival paper $30.00 each or any four  for $100.00 USD.

Landscape & Architecture

If the stars, moon and sky fascinate you (like me,) then I suggest you make them yours.  One thing about Maine is that we have beautiful sky! I feel privileged living in Maine as we are the first in America to actually see the sun rise because we are the most northeastern point in the country.  Gazing at the sky gives me a sense of place in this big world.  I often find myself sky-gazing.  I look to the sky often at differentt times of day; at twilight, dawn and dusk daily.  The horizon is a magical place where sky meets earth.  In this collection of landscapes I wanted to capture the sky in all it's glory.  I saw "Sunburst" and "December Dawn" right in my own city-backyard.  The other landscapes were painted during my summer stay in Massachusetts.

Still Life & Flowers
View this Collection

A still life is always a quick study to paint from life.  I find beauty in everyday objects, especially in the winter when I am snowbound at my home in Maine.  Painting a still life in warm colors warms my soul and is an energetic release for me.
My favorite flowers have to be lily of the valley, wild beach roses, sunflowers, forget-me-nots and garden flowers.  Even flowering weeds such as dandelions I delight in because of their bright yellow color.   In this collection  I have started to paint flowers as still life.   I plan to paint many more still life flower paintings this spring and summer as nature offers.

Sports

When I have the time, one of my favorite pass-times is watching NFL football and ALB Baseball . I sometimes paint while I have 'a game' on.  Decidedly the New England Patriots and the Boston Red Sox are my favorite teams.  I have been a true-blue-loyal New England fan since I was a kid growing up in Massachusetts.  It is a stunning time in New England for sports!  New England fans can finally rejoice in the recent years championship victories for both baseball and football.
I've  have been golfing since I was six years old. My parents' backyard overlooks the first fairway of a small golf course in Massachusetts.   "Choose to paint what you love....it will come easy to you." is what I tell my students.

The Ocean

The ocean is my favorite place to be. I love everything about it; the sand, the salt air, the breeze, the lull of the tide....the ocean centers me.  In this collection of work I have found many scenes on the coast of Maine and Massachusetts; by the ocean, at the ocean and near the coast from shorelines to still life.

Classic Muscle Cars!!!

Classic Muscle cars have always been fun for me to look at and ride in.  Back when I was in high school in the late 1970s the crowd I hung around with all drove and sometimes dragged their cars behind a certain church-yard and beach where we use to congregate.  Painting this series of Muscle Cars is a very fun nostaligic experience for me.

I have done two self portraits in a mixed-media pop art style and one in a monochromatic scheme.  I would like to continue and add to this collection with more portraits of people while experimenting with media and portrature styles.

New!! Beyond The Milky Way

In this collection you will find paintings interpreted from images taken by the Hubble Telescope, www.hubblesite.org   It fascinates me that these images from the Hubble Telescope happened over 4 billion years ago and took that long for us to finally see.
I find these images abstract in nature and some remind me of german born french expressionist, Wassily Kandinsky's work.  Images from the Hubble Telescope provide infinite inspiration and possibilities for new paintings.
